UPDATED: According to both ESPN’s Dan Rafael today in his online chat session and reports coming out of Britain, a July fight between feuding UK heavyweights David Haye and Dereck “Del Boy” Chisora is likely to be announced by promoter Frank Warren next Tuesday in England.
Del Boy set to return?
Haye of course is currently retired and unlicensed, and Chisora is on suspension from the British Boxing Board of Control after the press conference scuffle between the two fighters in Germany following Chisora’s UD loss to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.
Chisora’s next meeting with the BBBoC had been scheduled for Monday, May 14, when he was to appeal his previous ban. That appeal has now been pushed back to the end of June or beginning of July.
Reports out of England now indicate that the fight would be at the West Ham soccer stadium in July. The fighters would apparently meet in the ring without being licensed, or circumvent the BBBoC by obtaining boxing licenses elsewhere.
The card would also include a world lightweight title fight between Englishman Kevin Mitchell and Scottish champ Ricky Burns.
It was also announced recently that “Haye has topped England’s Athlete rich list after earning a reputed $24 million ( £15m ) for his Klitschko and Harrison PPV fights.”
In a good year so far, this grudge match promises to bring even more worldwide attention to the resurgent heavyweight division.
