Boxing Notebook: Roy Jones Jr., Estrada, Dulorme, Fury, Broner

The following is the boxinginsider notebook for the week of June 25th to July 2nd, covering the comings and goings in the sport of boxing.

Roy Jones Jr. Wins In Poland

Roy Jones Jr. is not the fighter he used to be, and hasn’t been in some time. However, at 43 years old he still gets offered fights and he still accepts them. On Saturday in Lodz, Poland Roy Jones Jr. (56-8) defeated Pawel Glazewski (17-1) by a split decision, with scores of 96-94, 96-93, and 95-94. By all accounts it was a close fight, and one that Jones should be happy that he won.

Former Olympian Jason Estrada Wins in Providence

Former 2008 U.S. Olympian Jason Estrada won an eight round decision over Alex Gonzales at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Estrada (19-4) won all eight rounds on the judges score cards over Gonzales (20-7) with scores of 80-72, 80-72 and 80-72.

Mijares Defeats Osejo

Cristian Mijares (46-6-2) defeated Eusebio Osejo (21-11-2) in the junior featherweight division on Saturday in Aguasclaientes, Mexico. Mijares has been on a tear since moving up to the junior featherweight division, and soundly defeated Osejo by scores of 98-91, 97-92, and 97-92.

Perez TKO’s Cruz

Michael Perez (16-1-1) was able to stop Eric Cruz (16-10-3) in the junior welterweight division in Caguas, Puerto Rico on Saturday. Perez aggressively attacked Cruz and bloodied him and knocked him down in the first round. Perez continued his assault in the second round and forced Eric Cruz to quit at 2:50 of the second round.

Thomas Dulorme Returns August 31st

On Friday August 31, 2012 at the Guillermo Angulo Coliseum in Carolina, Puerto Rico Thomas Dulorme (15-0) will be fighting Colombian fighter Ivan Hernandez (29-3) in the welterweight division. Dulorme is currently ranked #13 by the WBO, #3 by the WBC, and #3 by the WBA.

Hovhannisyan vs. Acosta Set for ShoBox

On July 20th Art Hovhannisyan (14-0) and Miguel Acosta (29-5-2) will be fighting in the 10 round main event on ShoBox for Showtime. Hovhannisyan has an undefeated record and has never touched the canvas as a professional or as an amateur. The co-main event will be between Philadelphia’s unbeaten rising star Julian Williams (9-0) and Nevada’s Said El Harrak (10-2). Tickets can be purchased at www.startickets.com

Tyson Fury to Be Broadcast on Wealth TV

WealthTV will telecast this Saturday’s heavyweight showdown between undefeated Tyson Fury and Vinny maddalone. It will start at 5 p.m. ET from the Hand Arena in Clevedon, Somerset, United Kingdom. Fury is the reigning Irish heavyweight champion, and is ranked 6th by the WBC. For more information go to www.wealthtv.com

Kevin Mitchell Says He’s Excited to Fight Ricky Burns

Kevin Mitchell says he more excited to be facing WBO World Lightweight Champion Ricky Burns than if he was matched with hot babe Kelly Brook.

Promoter Frank Warren has made this fight, pitching the English and Scottish rivals at the SECC in Glasgow on Saturday 22nd September and Mitchell is really fired-up for the Battle of Britain.

“I was over the moon when Frank made the fight between me and Burns, it’s the fight I’ve been desperate for and I know Burns has really wanted it, the fans have wanted it and so have the media, so it’s a dream that it’s finally on now,” said Mitchell. This fight can be seen on boxnation.

Rios & Diaz Set For July 28th

Fantasy Springs Report Casino in Indio, California will host a night of fistic action on Saturday, July 28th as Ronny Rios and former World Champion Julio Diaz will be on co-featured fights. Their opponents have yet to be named, but will headline Telefutura’s “Solo Boxeo Tecate”.

2 Days: Adrien Broner Premiers July 7th

HBO debuts an all-new installment of “2 Days” when the feature segment returns on Saturday, July 7th at midnight with a behind the scenes look at Cincinnati’s own rising sensation Adrien Broner. The show is an intimate look at a 48 hour span in the life of a boxer in the lead-up to one of his fights. HBO cameras followed Broner prior to his showdown last February with Eloy Perez.

Vladine Biosse Set To Return July 19th

Vladine Biosse had a huge win over Joey “K.O Kid” Spina in May, and already has another fight lined up for July 19th at Twin River in Providence, Rhode Island. Biosse has also recently finalized a contract extension with Jimmy Burchfield Sr. which keeps him in the city that has adopted Biosse as one of its celebrated athletes.
