“The Problem” is sure causing a lot of them.
After numerous media reports surfaced earlier today saying that tonight’s WBO junior lightweight title fight between Adrien “The Problem” Broner and Vincente Escobedo was cancelled, the latest has the fight going on after all.
Reports now say that Escobedo’s purse has been more than doubled, and that the challenger has recieved an apology from Broner’s advisor Al Haymon.
Broner weighed in Friday at 133.5 pounds, 3.5 over the contractual limit. He was then stripped of his lightweight title, which is still on the line for Escobedo.
Broner subsequently weighed in at 143 Saturday morning, causing Escobedo to pull out of the fight. Frantic negotiations then took place to save the event, and Escobedo apparently relented after receiving a substantial cash incentive.
The fight will be broadcast as part of HBO’s Boxing After Dark series.
