Showtime Boxing Undercard Results: Porter Dominates Lo Greco, Favorites Sweep

By: William Holmes

Boardwalk Hall opened up their doors at 3:30 P.M. and Golden Boy Promotions wasted little time in getting the action started in Atlantic City.

After three straight stoppages in the opening bouts, Washington DC’s Anthony Peterson (31-1) faced off against Dominic Salcido (18-4) in the junior welterweight division. Peterson came out on the attack and connected with several one two combinations and trapped Salcido in the corner. He landed a vicious body head combination in the second round and broke the nose of his opponent.

To Peterson’s surprise, and to the surprise of several in media row, Salcido failed to come out for the third round. Anthony Peterson won by TKO at the end of the second round.

Cesar Seda (24-1) fought Miguel Tamayo (13-5-2) next in the bantamweight division. Both fighters were southpaws but it did not seem to bother Cesar Seda. He picked Tamayo apart from the first round on and mixed up his combination to the body and head of his opponent. By round six the body blows of Seda were slowing Tamayo down and his punches were visibly moving Tamayo around the ring.

Seda came close to finishing the fight a few times, but Tamayo was somehow able to survive and stay on his feet. The final scores were 79-73, 80-72, and 80-70 for Cesar Seda.

The opening bout of the Showtime Extreme Telecast was between the 2012 Bronze Medalist Anthony Ogogo (1-0) and Edgar Perez (5-4) in the middleweight division. Edgar Perez had a winning record, but he did nothing but cover up the entire fight and serve as a punching bag for the much taller, quicker, and athletic Anthony Ogogo. Some fans in the crowd could be heard taunting Perez to open up and take some risks, but even after he suffered a cut near his right eye he remained in a defensive shell.

This fight was nothing but a sparring session for Ogogo. He won with scores of 60-54, 60-54, and 60-53.

Light heavyweight prospect Thomas Williams Jr. (13-0) met Otis Griffin (24-12-2) immediately after the Ogogo bout. Williams was a southpaw and Griffin was unable to figure out the southpaw style of Williams. Williams continuously landed his left hand and was able to trap Griffin in the corner several times throughout the fight, but when he did land a hard left hand he didn’t follow it up with combinations or attempt to finish the fight. He did wobble Griffin in the seventh round, but Griffin survived the fight.

The final scores were 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73.

The main event of the Showtime Extreme Televised portion of the card was between two undefeated prospects, Shawn Porter (20-0-1) and Phil Lo Greco (25-0) in the junior middleweight division.

Lo Greco had a vocal contingent in attendance cheering him on and they were easily identified by their red attire. Shawn Porter however had Lo Greco’s supporters silenced by the middle rounds.

Lo Greco showed good defense early on and Porter’s punches were unable to find their way past his defense upstairs, but Porter launched a steady and strong attack to Lo Greco’s body that was getting past his defense.

Porter began to land his uppercut in the third round and was able to avoid the offense of Lo Greco. Lo Greco showed his frustration in the fourth round and taunted Porter to come forward. Porter complied with Lo Greco’s request and continued to pound him from corner to corner.

Porter scored two knockdowns, once in the 8th round that probably should have been ruled a slip, and again in the last round that was a clean knockdown. Shawn Porter won an impressive decision victory with scores of 99-89, 100-88, and 100-88.

The last bout of the undercard was between Haroon Khan (1-0) and Vincente Medellin (0-5) in the bantamweight division. Khan scored a quick knockdown with a cross upstairs and then landed an uppercut to the body that knocked Medellin down again. The referee rightly waived the fight off at 0:57 of round one.

Opening Bouts Quick Results:

Jamel Herring (3-0) defeated Victor Galindo (1-1) by TKO at 2:01 of the first round in the lightweight division.

Robert Easter Jr. (3-0) defeated Victor Galindo (1-1) by TKO at 1:30 of the second round in the lightweight division.

Rau’Shee Warren (3-0) defeated Angel Carvajal (2-1) by TKO at 2:05 of the fourth round in the bantamweight division.
