Dereck “Del Boy” Chisora Stops Edmund Gerber

By Johnny Walker

With injured UK rival David Haye suddenly out of the current heavyweight picture today, another Brit, Dereck Chisora, has snuck his way back in.

A very in-shape Chisora, fighting at the lightest weight of his professional career, easily disposed of robotic German Edmund Gerber, stopping him at 2:50 of round five.

Aside from surviving a couple of stiff left hands to the jaw in round four, Chisora dominated the fight, crowding the one-dimensional Gerber and lacing him with stinging body shots that took the wind out of the German’s sails.

Finally, a flurry of shots in the corner by Chisora that left Berger dazed and confused resulted in the referee calling the fight off quickly, which is nothing new when it comes to fights in the UK where non-Brits are involved.

However, it seemed certain that it was only a matter of time until Gerber hit the canvas, so perhaps the call was the correct one.

After the fight, both Chisora and his promoter Frank Warren called for a rematch between Fury and Chisora in December. Their first fight, in 2011, resulted in a wide UD for Fury over an overweight and disinterested Chisora. And with Haye out of the picture, the time may be right for the rematch.

Now, Chisora claims his mother told him to take boxing seriously or quit doing it, and it seems the fighter has chosen the former advice.
