At the Hull Arena in the UK tonight, Australia’s Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (18-0, 16 KOs), destroyed Sheffield’s Richard Towers (14-1, 11 KOs) in what turned out to be a mismatch of unbeaten heavyweights.
Browne was the aggressor from the start of the fight, looking to load up and land hard on the lanky, 6’8″ Towers, who meekly threw out a long jab as he warily backed away and tried to keep the bullish Aussie off of him.
A clash of heads that bloodied Browne’s right eye did not deter him in the least, and he finally broke through in round number three with a hard shot that sent Towers back-pedaling across the ring and into the ropes. Browne moved in to try and finish the proceedings, but the bell saved the groggy Towers in this instance.
Towers managed to use a pawing jab to avoid further disaster as Browne bullied him around the ring and loaded up in round four, but in round five, a determined Big Daddy launched an all-out assault, trapping Towers along the ropes and strafing him with power punches that almost sent the Brit over the ring ropes and into the crowd.
When separated, Towers appeared to not know where his corner was as he staggered drunkenly around the ring, and at 0:51 of the round, referee Steve Gray wisely called off the fight, saving Towers from possible serious injury from the big-punching Browne, the winner by TKO.
Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne is now next in line for a shot at David Price’s Commonwealth title belt, but isn’t sure Price will be willing to take him on after suffering two straight KO losses to American veteran Tony Thompson.
“I’m ready for it, to be honest I don’t know if David Price is? He’s lost his last two by TKO so will he want to take on a big puncher like me? I’m not so sure,” a happy Browne said after the match.
