Mac Foster Passes Away

MacArthur (Mac) Foster, a former top 10 heavyweight contender from Fresno, California, who boxed Muhammad Ali in 1972, died Monday morning at age 68. Foster fought from 1966 to 1976 and had a professional ring record of 30-6 with all of his victories coming by knockout. The highlight of Foster’s career was losing to Ali by a 15-round decision on April 1, 1972, in Tokyo, Japan. Foster scored career wins against Zora Folley and Cleveland Williams twice. He boxed four times in the famed Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles and once in Madison Square Garden in New York City. Among the other top heavyweights on his record, Foster was defeated by Jerry Quarry and Joe Bugner. His last fight was in 1976 – a unanimous decision loss to the 4-0-2 prospect Stan Ward.

Mac Foster was born in Alexandria, VA on June 27, 1942. He later relocated to Fresno, CA.
