Besides the amazingly well-selling attraction between “Canelo” Alvarez and Austin Trout, boxing fans in San Antonio will be focused on another 12-round title fight on the card. The WBC Silver Super-Bantamweight Championship will pit undefeated Andres Gutierrez against 27-year old 30-5 Mexican fighter Salvador Sanchez.
The interesting thing about this match-up is Gutierrez himself. At only 19 years old, he is already 25-0-1. He turned pro in his native Mexico at the unbelievably young age of 15. Not too many boxers his age have 25 wins with 21 KOs.
Besides being a heavy puncher and a good closer, he also has a good support team. Being promoted by Canelo Promotions is definitely a plus. Canelo is a hot property right now and he has a lot of faith in Gutierrez. This is the second time the young prospect has fought in Las Vegas on an Alvarez undercard. He fought a six-rounder against Carlos Valcarcel on the undercard of Alvarez/Lopez last September.
Sanchez is not expected to be a huge test for Gutierrez. He got KOed by Jayson Velez in the third round four months ago and lost his first two pro fights in a row. He is a decent fighter who has won the WBC Carribean title and defended it several times. But he is seriously over-reaching here.
In any case, this fight adds a little spice to the 9-bout card. There are 72 rounds scheduled and it looks like a long night of boxing. Hopefully this face-off will be a lively one.
