Jackie Kallen: Weekend Fight Preview

The fight that most people are taking about this weekend is the face-off between Mike Jones (26-1) and Jaime Herrera (11-2) at Bally’s in Atlantic City.

First off, it’s obvious that Herrera has had less than half as many fights as Jones and is at a disadvantage experience-wise. Then there’s the home-town advantage that Jones has, being from Philly. Not to mention that his 70% KO ratio is way better than Herrera’s 46%.

What is going for young Herrera is the fact that Jones hasn’t fought since he was KOed by Randall Bailey back in June 2012. That’s a long time in boxing years. Herrera just fought in March and is coming off two KO wins. That could be a slight advantage for him.

So these factors put this fight in an interesting light. For Jones, it’s an activity fight; a tune-up to see what he still has left. He surely doesn’t look at Herrera as a serious threat. For Herrera, however, it’s a huge chance to score an upset and get known. It can be seen on gofightlive.com.

Another televised fight this weekend is tonight. On ESPN, Austin Trout (26-2) fights Daniel Dawson (40-3) in Temecula, CA. Trout, the former WBA champ is coming off two losses in a row (to Erislandy Lara and Canelo Alvarez.) His confidence is not at an all-time high. I’m sure he considers 38 year-old Dawson an easy fight. His last win was over 39 year-old Alex Bunema. But as we’ve said many times before, upsets can happen any night to any fighter.

Admittedly this is not the most exciting weekend in boxing history, but at least the fans have a couple of fights to watch that could turn out to be worth seeing.
