AARP Announces 2009 Boxing/MMA Medical Conference

Darien, Connecticut – June 2, 2009 – The American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians (the “AAPRP”)

Darien, Connecticut – June 2, 2009 – The American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians (the “AAPRP”) announced today that its 9th annual medical conference on Boxing/MMA ringside safety will take place October 14-18, 2009 at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

This medical conference is one of the organizations most important events. Leading ringside physicians, fighters, trainers, managers, promoters, commissioners and media from around the world will be in attendance. The meetings, which begin on Thursday, October 15, will include lectures and presentations by some of the most experienced and respected ringside officials in boxing and mixed martial arts. This four-day seminar will feature a golf outing, a cocktail reception and an awards banquet. Continuing Medical Education Credits (CME) will be offered for all physicians that attend the meetings. Furthermore, attendees will have the opportunity to witness a live professional bull riding competition as a part of this special weekend. Additionally, the Mohegan Sun Athletic Commission is currently working with the AAPRP to schedule a boxing/MMA contest to coincide with this year’s convention.

Topics so far scheduled include an update on neurological imaging and study results, an overview of the legal aspects of ringside medicine, a review of ringside medical protocols, an infectious disease update including new information on Hepatitis B & C, the popular “the show must go on” presentation, a review of medical testing interpretation, an overview by the commissioners for approving boxing and MMA matches, a neuro-psych testing training course, an update on MMA equipment, the approval/denial of performance enhancing drugs in sports and methods to detect fighters at risk for injury. Additional topics will be added as well.

Established in 1997, the AAPRP was created to develop medical protocols and guidelines to ensure the safety and protection of professional boxer. The not-for-profit association is comprised of experienced ringside physicians from around the world who are dedicated to the medical aspects of the sport of boxing. Since its inception, the AAPRP has consistently grown to include physicians from around the globe who are working together toward a common goal of helping to ensure the health, safety and protection of professional boxers.
