“Big Daddy” Lucas Browne Mows Down Chauncey Welliver

By Johnny Walker

Australian Heavyweight Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne (22-0, 19 KOs) added to his collection of title belts today when he took out portly but durable American Chauncey Welliver at the Hisense Arena, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

The massive, but more sleek-looking Big Daddy, who looked as tall as his opponent did wide, cruised through the bout, his only worry being a tendency to cut easily. However, his corner did a fine job on a cut near the Big Daddy’s eye, and Browne had no further problems, except for hurting his right hand on Welliver’s rock hard skull.

Urged by his corner to turn up the heat in round 5, Browne did just that, landing booming hooks and straight rights that had Welliver reeling. Near the end of the round, Welliver’s left eye was completely closed, and doctors feared he may have suffered a fractured left eye socket from one of Big Daddy’s fistic howitzers. The fight was then called off by the doctor and the referee.

As for what’s next for Big Daddy, he recently challenged big-mouthed Klitschko stalker Shannon Briggs, to a bout, but it’s unlikely that a fighter who ducked Browne’s inferior countryman Alex Leapai would take a chance on being wrecked by Big Daddy. The same goes for another big-mouthed American, Deontay Wilder, whose persona Browne recently professed a strong personal dislike for.

Perhaps countryman Alex Leapai, coming off of two straight losses to world champion Wladimir Klitschko and Malik Scott, would consider fighting Browne — but a third loss in a row seems the likely outcome there.

In the meantime, we’ll have to wait and see what Browne’s famous promoter Ricky Hatton can arrange for his rising heavyweight,
