Boxing Insider Notebook: Sadam Ali, Nathan Cleverly, Brandon Rios

The following is the Boxing Insider notebook for the week of October 22nd to October 29th, covering the comings and goings in the sport of boxing that you might have missed.

Sadam Ali Remains Undefeated

2008 U.S. Olympian Sadam “World Kid” Ali (16-0) stopped Ronnie “The Natural” Warrior Jr. (13-8-1) in the second round of Saturday night’s main event at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, NY. He stopped him with well timed right hand thrown at 2:59 of the second round.

In a non-title fight, WBC FECARBOX cruiserweight champion Santander “Cha-Cha” Silgado (23-0, 18 KOs) defeated Joell Godfrey (15-9-1, 6 KOs) for the second time in two months. Silgado won an eight-round decision over Godfrey this past August and repeated that outcome in the co-feature against his late replacement.

Jimmy Lange Upset

Jimmy Lange (38-5-2) self promoted a boxing card on Saturday October 27th but lost in the main event to Tony “Mo Better” Jeter (15-3-1). Lange scored a first round knockdown and Jeter earned four points on deductions for low blows, but Jeter was still able to pull out the victory. Harry Joe Yorgey won in the co-main event with a TKO at 2:41 of the first round.

Thanksgiving Eve Boxing Event Planned

Bobby Hitz of Hitz Boxing will continue his yearly tradition of doing a boxing event on Thanksgiving Eve with his final “Fight Night at the Horseshoe” installment of the year on Wednesday, November 21,2012 at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. In the main event Andrey Fedosov (22-2) will face former NABA Champion Rodney Moore (17-6-2). Dimar “Strongman” Ortuz (5-0) will face UFC veteran Terry Martin (5-0) in the cruiserweight division. Cleverly Backs Flintoff

WBO World Light-Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly met with new pro Freddie Flintoff at the Peacock GYM in London. He spoke to the media before he heads off to the US for his world title defense on Saturday November 10th at the Staples Centre in Los Angles. He had the following to say about Freddie Flintoff.

“Freddie’s had a few battles on the cricket pitch with his team mates but when it’s one-on-one in a boxing ring, that’s when you’ve got to really stand and prove your character,”

“I think that Freddie’s made of the tough stuff, he was a beast on the pitch having the Aussies on the run, so he’s got to take that same fire and desire he showed when England won the Ashes in 2005 into the ring with him,”

Brandon Rios and Robert Garcia Donate Their Time for a Great Cause

Brandon Rios just won the fight of his life 2 weeks ago, Robert Garcia is one of the busiest trainers in the world, Trainer of the year 2011, busy guys, but that doesn’t stop them from giving back to the people who need it the most, Children suffering from cancer and their families.

On Saturday, October 27, 2012 Brandon Rios along with his trainer Robert Garcia, team Donald Leary, Nancy Rodriguez and his wife Vicky Rios facilitated a Boxing Clinic at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, California. For the non-profit organization Brandon is Ambassador of, PADRES CONTRA EL CANCER’s (Parents Against Cancer) HOPE Fair.

Brandon Rios was invited to this event post his October 13th victory against Mike Alvarado, and even if he always takes some much needed time to rest and spend with his family, without hesitation he agreed to be part of this HOPE Fair. When Brandon asked busy trainer, Robert Garcia, to accompany him, he also agreed immediately.

The boxing clinic was mainly targeted to the Fathers of the Children and older siblings but all children were welcomed. For more information regarding Padres Contra El Cancer at www.iamhope.net or www.bambamrios.com.

Firat Arslan Ready for Marco Huck

On November 3rd at the Gerry Weber Stadium Cruiserweight World Champion Marco Huck (34-2-1) will try to defend his belt for the tenth time against Firat Arslan (32-5-1).

Arslan had the following to say about the fight: We tried to break the mold for the most important fight in my career. We used a special heavy bag that enabled me to work on my accuracy. I also had a special training tool to strengthen my lungs. I know that some boxing experts have already written me off but on November 3, I will try to prove them wrong.

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason ‘Big Six’ Estrada Ready and On Call for Big Shot

Thirty-one-year-old Jason “Big Six” Estrada (19-4, 5 KOs) has been patiently waiting the past two years for his last shot at the big-time. The 2004 U.S. Olympian, fighting out of Providence, is preparing to headline the November 10th “Big Things” card at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence.

Estrada fights veteran Galen “Bad Boy” Brown (38-20-1, 23 KOs) in the eight-round main event, presented by Big Six Promotions, on the “Big Things” show featuring many of New England’s favorite boxers. Estrada has won his last three fights against Alex Gonzales, Dominique Alexander and Joseph Rabotte, while the battle-tested Brown has fought former world champion Hasim Rahman, world title challenger Mariusz Wach, and former Russian titlist Andrey Fedosov.

Gabriel Rosado Withdraws From December 8th Bout

Number one rated junior middleweight contender Gabriel Rosado did an about face and decided to withdraw from his intended bout with Elvin Ayala on December 8th. Rosado said, After talking things over with my trainer, Billy Briscoe, I have decided to pass on the Dec. 8th fight with Elvin Ayala and wait to see what K9 Bundrage’s next move is concerning my chance to fight him for the IBF world title by next March.

DiBella Adds Another Future Star to his Roster as Travis Peterkin Impresses in DBE Debut

Travis Peterkin (5-0) made his DiBella Entertainment debut and scored a four-round unanimous decision over Hamid Abdul Mateen. They were both former New York Golden Gloves champions but it was evident that Peterkin was going to be too much for Mateen. Peterkin is looking to have the type of breakout year that everyone has been anticipating for him since he turned pro in 2011.

Donaire Makes Film Debut in Visayan Indie

Filipino Nonito Donaire is now busy promoting his debut movie. In his live guest appearance on “Umagang Kay Ganda” on Monday, Donaire shared his excitement over his Visayan independent film “Palad Ta Ang Nagbuout” (Our Fate Decides) which will premiere on October 31st. It’s a Visayan movie but English subtitles will be present. More info can be found here.

Chris Algieri vs. Daniel Sostre Headlines Rockin Fights 5

Chris Algieri returns to actions on Saturday November 17th against junior welterweight Daniel “The Hudson Valley Kid” Sostre of Highland New York. The fight be at the Paramount in Huntington, and the first four shows of the Rockin Fights series have sold out. Tickets can be purchased at www.starboxing.com.

Lawrence v. Guinn Cancelled, Bute vs. Grachev on Nov. 3rd

WealthTV has announced that the card featuring Franlin Lawrence and Dominick Guinn has been canceled, and the next live fight will be between Lucian Bute and Denis Grachev on November 3rd as well as a flyweight unification fight between Brian Viloria and Hernan Marquez on November 17th.

Kessler in Belfast: No Danish hat-trick for Magee

Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KOs) travelled to Belfast to promote his WBA Super-Middleweight World Title clash with Brian Magee (36-4-1, 25 KOs). Both fighters, who will collide at Jyske Bank BOXEN in Herning on December 8, and their promoters faced the media during a packed downtown press conference at the renowned Europa Hotel, which is the world´s most bombed hotel, according to Wikipedia.

“This place certainly has a history,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said. “Just like Brian Magee has a history with the Danish sports fans. He has come over to Denmark twice to eradicate two of their boxing heroes, Mads Larsen and Rudy Markussen. You have to give him credit for that. But twice is more than enough. Mikkel Kessler will put an end to his streak, set the record straight and win this fight for his country.

Kessler said. “Brian has already made a lot of successful trips abroad, and two of them have been to Denmark. But I will make sure that his third trip over will not be a good one for him.
