Boxing Insider Notebook: Salido, Dawson, Ward, and More

The following is the Boxinginsider.com notebook for the week of July 23rd to July 30th, covering the comings and goings in the sport of boxing.

Chris Algieri Wins at Star Boxing’s Rocking Fights 4

Chris Algieri won on Saturday night at the Paramount in Huntington, New York and improved to 15-0 with a victory over Raul Tovar in the junior welterweight division. Algieri won with scores of 78-74, 77-75, and 77-75. Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin improved to 8-0 with a first round stoppage over Jonathan Garcia.

Sosa Stops Ikehara

In the flyweight division, Edgar Sosa (46-7) stopped Shigetaka Ikehara (22-4-2) in the ninth round on Saturday in Leon, Mexico. Sosa has been rebounding nicely since losing to Pongsaklek Wonjongkam in October. Sosa ended the 8th round strongly and Ikehara’s corner wisely stopped the fight with Ikehara still sitting in his corner before the 9th round began.

Orlando Salido Makes Quick Work of Gutierrez

Orlando Salido (39-11-2) remained on his hot streak with a 3rd round knockout over Moises Gutierrez I Chihuahua, Mexico on Saturday. Salido beat the much-hyped Juan Manuel Lopez not once, but twice, and continues to win while making a late career surge. Reports had Salido dominating the bout before dropping Gutierrez at 2:49 of the third round for the KO victory.

Diaz and Rios Win in California

Ronny Rios (19-0) remained undefeated with a 9th round KO over David Rodela (16-7-3) in the junior lightweight division. Rios pounded Rodela with several unanswered punches and forced the referee to stop the bout at 1:14 of the 9th. Julio Diaz (39-7) scored a 5th round KO over Henry Aurad (14-5-1) on the same card. Diaz scored two knockdowns before the referee called it off at 0:54 of round number 5.

ShoBox Announces Doubleheader for August 24th

Showtime has announced a doubleheader event for their August 24th card to feature Randy Caballero vs. Maunel Romand and Michael Perez vs. Fidel Maldonado at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. Randy Caballero hopes to remain undefeated when he defends his NABO title against Manuel Roman in the main event. Tickets canbe purchased at www.fantasyspringsresort.com

Joe DeGuardia in Car Accident

Star Boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia was involved in a car accident early on Sunday morning and remains hospitalized in serious condition. His car was struck by a black Honda Civic that was driving the wrong way in Jericho, L.I. The accident was first reported by the NY Daily News.

Billy Joe Saunders Defends Commwealth Title Agaisnt Jarrod Fletcher

Billy Joe Saunders will be defending his Commonwealth Middleweight title against Australian Jarrod Fletcher at the Wembley Arena on Friday, September 14th. The fight will be televised live on BoxNation and is a bout between two undefeated fighters. Tickets can be purchased online.

Snooki Promotions Patrick Hyland Headlines August 8th Card

Undefeated featherweight Patrick Hyland will be headlining an August 8th car in Rochester, NY, and looks to establish an Irish Boxing record for the most consecutive victories to start a professional career. He will be headlining an outdoor show at Sahlen Stadium in Rochester, New York. Hyland will be fighting Carlos “El Flaco” Fulgencio (19-7-1) in the main event.

Demarcus Corley Offers Up Services to Karim Mayfield

Unbeaten junior welterweight Karim Mayfield is looking for an opponent for his upcoming August 17th fight on ESPN Friday Night Fights, and former world-champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley has offered to step in. Corley has been experiencing a career resurgence as of late and has defeated the previously unbeaten Gabriel Braceo and Paul McCloskey in his last two bouts.

“I am hearing and reading that this guy Mayfield is looking for an opponent,” said Corley. “Well I am available, so let’s make it happen. If he wants to fight then let’s make it happen. It is that simple. Just contact my promoter DiBella Entertainment and we are good to go.”

Back to Back Shows Planned in the Dominican Republic

On August 11th and 12th Sampson Boxing and Manguita Promotions will be putting on back to back shows at the Coliseo Teo Cruz in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

August 11th will feature Katy Pamela “La Super Baby” Wilson (15-1) defending her IBF Female Super Bantamweight Championship against Crystal Hoy (5-4-3). Victor Cayo (28-3) will be fighting unbeaten Julio “La Para” De Jesus (15-0) on the same card. The next night will feature IBF Female Featherweight World Champion Daihana Santana (29-6) defending her title against Helen Joseph (11-1-1) and Juan Carlos Abreu (10-0) against John Nater (9-2).

HBO Sports Documentary 24/7 Road to Ward/Dawson Debuts August 25th

HBO will be debuting their latest 24/7 documentary on Saturday, August 25th, featuring the two fighters taking part in their September super middleweight title fight between Andre Ward and Chad Dawson. The 30-minute show will offer an inside look at both boxers as they prepare for the upcoming showdown.

Collado vs. Merdov Set for August 17th

Irish-based Cuban Alexei “The Hurrican” Collado will be fighting the Ukranian Stanyslav Merdov on August 17th at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar on the undercard of Henry Coyle’s WBF Light Middlweight title defense against Marcelo Rodriguez. Merdov recently lost a close decision to world champion Chris John, and Collado hopes a victory will lead him towards a future title shot.

Darley Perez vs. Bahodir Mamadjonov Set for August 10th

Gary Show Productions will be promoting a card for ESPN Friday Night Fights on August 10th at the Morongo Casino. The main event will be between Darley Perez (25-0) and Bahodir Mamadjonov (11-0) in the lightweight division. Michael Katsidis was originally supposed to be in the main event, but had to pull out because of a knee injury.

Andre Ward Picks Derrick Webster as Sparring Partner

After spending time in Las Vegas last month with Freddie Roach and Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., undefeated super middleweight Derrick “Take it to the Bank” Webster (13-0, 7 KOs) is now headed to Big Bear Mountain in California to help prepare WBA (Super) and WBC Super Middleweight Champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KOs) for his upcoming title defense.

“Everything is really starting to hit home for me,” an appreciative Webster said of the recent advancements in his career. “Andre Ward is the best in the division. For him to see me as a person who can get him ready for the fight with [Chad] Dawson, it really means a lot to me. Ward is one fighter who is not missing much in terms of what he is capable of doing. Basically, he does everything right, and he works extremely hard. Not a lot of fighters have his work ethic.”

Undefeated Joel Diaz Takes on Guillermo Sanchez August 18th

On Saturday August 18th John Lynch’s Pound for Pound Promotions will be presenting a card that features a ten round Super Featherweight bout between Joel Diaz and Guillermo Sanchez at Ballys in Atlantic City. Talented prospect Glen “Jersey Boy” Tapia (14-0) will also be on the card fighting an opponent yet to be named.
