Breaking News: Canelo-GGG II On For September 15th

By: Sean Crose

“I’m happy to inform that we have a fight September 15!!!! #CaneloGGG2 Feliz De informar que si tenemos pelea Septiembre 15!!! #CaneloGGG2 ”

With the above Tweet, Oscar De La Hoya, head of Golden Boy Promotions announced Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin II, a rematch that seemed like it might not ever happen. The match was due to go down last spring in Las Vegas, but Canelo tested positive for having the banned substance Clenbuterol in his system. Not only did the much hyped bout fall through, Canelo was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for six months, meaning he was effectively out of the fight game for half a year.

To make matters even more vexing, Golovkin was hesitant to sign on to a rematch at a later date until he felt he was getting the money he was worth. Although Canelo is clearly the more lucrative and famous of the two fighters, many feel Golovkin won their original bout last fall, even though it was controversially ruled a draw. What’s more, Golovkin expressed hostility towards Canelo because he felt the man had cheated. For his part, Canelo denied that he intentionally took any banned substances, but the resentment was still in play.

Up until Wednesday afternoon, it appeared that negotiations might fall through, with a De La Hoya imposed deadline coming and going. Things were finally settled once and for all, however, and now fans can expect the long awaited fight to finally go down on September 15th.
