Showtime boxing went out with a bang to the boxing year with a stacked card full of local favorites, former and current world champs, and the highly anticipated crown for Brooklyn’s boxing King. The atmosphere in the Barclays center was electric filled with some of the best fighters in the world in attendance to take in all the action.
Showtime extreme started the action with an undercard showcasing local favorites Marcus Browne of Staten Island, and former WBO Jr. Welterweight champion Chris Algieri of Long Island.
The Co-Main against Jesus Cuellar and Jonathan Oquendo showed the challenger Oquendo’s stock plummet as the WBA “Regular” champion, just may have set himself up for a shot at the “Super” title against Leo Santa Cruz.
The Main event was all action packed. Quillin got caught immediately by an aggressive all in Danny “Miracle Man” Jacobs. Jacobs attacked and finished the show with a devastating first round TKO, giving the former champion Peter Quillin the first loss of his professional career.
Jesus Cuellar (27-1 21KO) vs. Jonathan Oquendo (26-4 16KO): Featherweight
Jesus Cuellar came to do what he does best, make it a fight. The WBA “regular” featherweight champ was not only the more aggressive punches, but the more accurate with his power punches. Oquendo started out slow, and even when he landed a power punch of his own, it seemed not to bother Cuellar at all.
Cuellar threw wild, looping punches, but he threw more and he threw harder. In the fourth rd, one of his Left hands landed to the head of Oquendo putting him onto the canvas at the half way point of the round.
Most of the fight was more of the same. Oquendo seemed uncomfortable, having to fight off his back foot while trying to weather the storm of a stronger punching opponent.
Oquendo did put together some good rounds together in the 7th and 8th, but lacked any explosiveness that could do any damage to the faster, stronger, and still champion, Jesus Cuellar.

Daniel Jacobs (30-1 27KO) vs. Peter Quillin (32-0-1 23KO): Middleweight
Jacobs and Quillin came out pawing at each other but Jacobs came out and caught Quillin with a large right hand that hurt the former champ bad. Jacobs went into straight attack mode, throwing everything he had at Quillin.
Jacobs looked to be almost about to tire out when he landed a huge right hand on Quillin temple that made Quillins legs jelly, and the fight had to be stopped as Quillin was completely out on his feet.
