David Haye Fight With Tyson Fury Off: Haye Advised To Retire

by Johnny Walker

Confirming what camp Tyson Fury has been saying since his opponent postponed their bout because of a cut incurred in sparring, UK heavyweight David Haye has now completely called off the bout with the Anglo-Irish giant, saying that after shoulder surgery he has been told to retire from boxing.

The fight was to have taken place February 8, 2014 in Manchester, after being postponed from last September 28.

At the time, the Fury camp implied that Haye was not to be trusted, with Tyson’s trainer and uncle Peter saying they were moving ahead and lining up other possible opponents, should Haye pull another vanishing act. Peter Fury all along harbored doubts about Haye’s ultimate willingness to fight his nephew.

Today on Twitter, Peter Fury said, “No surprise to me said all along fights not going go happen. Let’s get show back on the road with a real HW fight.”

Haye, pictured lying prone in a hospital bed, said the news was a “crushing blow” to him.

“I had big plans for next year and the ultimate goal was to win back the world heavyweight title, something my amazing fans deserve,” said Haye in a statement.

“What I didn’t anticipate was that this year would be the unluckiest of my career and that a number of injuries would disrupt my plans so much.

“Perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be. The boxing gods keep hinting that maybe enough is enough and that it’s time to finally hang up my gloves.”

Tyson Fury is viewing all of this as an excuse for Haye, who has never fared that well against giant heavyweights (a controversial win over Nikolai Valuev; a humiliating loss to world champ Wladimir Klitschko), as a way to weasel out of their fight.

“I smell pussy is that u David I smell pussy is that u David ?? I smell pussy! I smell pussy!!@mrdavidhaye,” a bemused Fury said today on his Twitter account.

Haye, of course, has “retired” before only to return. One wonders if an offer from WBC world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko could change his mind.

If Haye does stay retired, his notorious trainer Adam Booth still has the services of newly signed giant heavyweight David Price at his disposal.

A fight between the man Tyson Fury called a “plumber from Liverpool” and himself would still be of great interest in the UK, even after Price’s two consecutive losses to American veteran Tony Thompson.
