Chicago, Illinois- Welterweight Roberto Garcia, 36-3-0-(23), continued on his path towards a title shot by out working former Amir Khan slayer Breidis Prescott, 27-6-0-(20). Prescott, who’s fought most of his career as a lightweight, used his quicker hands and footwork to do well in the beginning of the bout. Garcia, however, invested early and often to the body and eventually began to slow Prescott down. Garcia has been a welterweight his entire professional career and it showed, as Prescott, a noted puncher at lightweight, was unable to really get his respect. Prescott made things interesting by scoring a beautiful knockdown when he blinded Garcia with a jab and then slipped in a perfectly executed right cross. Garcia got up quickly and rebounded by dominating the tenth and final round. Garcia Garcia prevailed 96-93, 95-94, 96-92.
In the co-feature middleweight Celeb Truax, 23-2-1-(14), dominated the much smaller Derrick “Pooh Boy” Ennis, 24-4-1-(13). Truax is usually a reserved counter puncher but transformed nicely into a more aggressive fighter in order to take advantage of the notoriously passive Ennis. Truax won virtually every round but never really came close to stopping Ennis. Scores were 97-93, 97-93, 99-90.
Notre Dame graduate and Subway pitchman Mike Lee, 13-0-0-(7), barely kept his undefeated record intact by winning a split decision over the game Paul Gonsalves, 7-4-0-(3). It was Lee’s first bout in a year and he was clearly suffering from ring rust. Gonsalves successfully bloodied Lee’s nose but wasn’t quite strong enough to hold Lee off. Final scores were 58-56, 58-56 and 57-57.
