Golden Boy’s CEO Richard Schaefer is extremely eager to make Manny Pacquiao box Juan Manuel Marquez III as the next big Pacquiaomania event in 2011. Schaefer, through his recent media words and actions, seems almost desperate to secure this fight for his company and his limited B-side attraction Marquez, so they can, of course, cash in and prosper grandly off the popularity of Pacquiao.
Schaefer is practically begging Arum for the big favor of making the moderately interesting Pacquiao vs. Marquez III. But if Schaefer were to receive his wish, would he return any favors to Arum?
Top Rank chief Bob Arum has, to this point, played a non-committal stance regarding Pacquiao’s next fight, and appears to favor the Shane Mosley option over Marquez, as Mosley is said to be a free agent and free of any ties to Golden Boy.
An interesting option that Arum can play is to pose Schaefer with the offer that they can have the next shot at Pacquiao with Marquez, under one simple condition – that Golden Boy will promise to deliver Floyd Mayweather as the next opponent for Manny Pacquiao later in 2011.
Schaefer continues to promise the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight will happen “when the time is right”, as if it’s going to happen. Instead of using such vague terminology, can Richard Schaefer commit himself and the promise of delivering Mayweather to Pacquiao in 2011? Can Richard Schaefer obtain a commitment of a time frame of when Mayweather’s time will be right to face Pacquiao? Or is that an impossibility at this point?
By Arum posing this unique offer to Schaefer, the boxing world can learn a lot about the true schemes of Schaefer and Mayweather and if they really truly seek to fight Pacquiao soon – or if they are only pretending to posture that way in order to protect Mayweather’s plummeting credibility.
