Mike Alvarado Arrested Over Weekend, Fight With Rios Apparently Still On

With just weeks to go before his highly anticipated third fight with arch foe Brandon Rios, Denver based welterweight slugger Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) was arrested over the weekend in the Mile High City. The Denver Post reports Alvarado was brought in “on a felony warrant and suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon.”
For now, at least, the January 24 bout with Rios in Colorado is still on. Middleweight champ Jermain Taylor is scheduled to fight in February while having been recently charged with shooting a person. In other words, it would be no big surprise to still see Alvarado and Rios having the rubber match of their trilogy on HBO.
An exciting fighter, Alvarado has had repeated trouble with the law over the years. This latest incident happened during the wee hours of Saturday morning, when Alvarado’s Hummer was pulled over by law enforcement.

The Post reports that, “Police say Alvarado, 34, appeared to be pushing something into the glove box when they approached the car, court records show. Officers ran a records check on Alvarado and found he was wanted on a felony warrant and a traffic offense out of Adams County.”
Police apparently saw “a Taurus handgun inside the glove box.”
Alvarado was released on over $40,000 bond after refusing to speak with the police.
Alvarado’s manager, Henry Delgado, declared that this past weekend’s arrest shouldn’t have any effect on the third Rios bout. He also made it clear, however, that he’s unsure of what will happen to Alvarado after that.
