2004 Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada makes

Boxing 360 debut Saturday night at Turning Stone

NEW YORK (January 25, 2011) – 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada, one of the most decorated amateur boxers of all-time, returns to the ring after nearly a full year’s absence due to foot surgery, Saturday night in his Boxing 360 debut against Franklin “Yah Yah” Lawrence in the 10-round main event for the vacant WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation heavyweight title, at Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York.

Estrada, fighting out of Providence, has fought everyone and anybody put in the ring with him, never turning down a fight, and none of his opponents has had a losing record (311-101-15 combined record of his opponents) when they fought “Big Six.” His three losses were all on the road in the backyards of former world champion Tomasz Adamek, 2004 Olympic gold medalist Alexander Povetkin and Travis Walker. During his 6-year pro career, Estrada has never been floored, never mind stopped, and the quick-handed, slick-footed heavyweight has unfinished business to take care of, which was supposed to start January 13 in Oklahoma. But he was snowed in at home, cancelling that fight, but an opportunity eventually opened-up at Turning Stone when another Boxing 360 heavyweight, Mike Mollo, was injured in training camp. His CABOFE title fight Jan. 29 at Turning Stone against Manuel Quezada was scratched and Boxing 360 was able to fill the spot with Estrada-Lawrence.

“We want to thank promoter Dave Escalet for working with us to make this fight happen,” Boxing 360 Founder and CEO Mario Yagobi commented. “We believe that Jason has a big future and we’re going to do everything possible to help make him world champion.”

The 30-year-old Estrada (16-3, 4 KOs) was one of the most highly-decorated American amateur boxers ever, compiling an amazing 261-14 record in U.S. competition, as well as the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years (2001-2003) in a row. The highlight of his amateur career was representing the United States in the 2004 Olympics, although planter ficitis in his right foot severely hampered his training and performances.

“I was ticked-off because that day was finally here,” Estrada spoke about his disappointment regarding the cancellation of his January 13th fight. “It just didn’t work out but flames were coming out of my nose that day. I was ready to go. I didn’t stop training, other than for that weekend, and went back to work in the gym that following Monday. Boxing 360 said they were working on something for me and, just in case, I stayed in the gym. It worked out better for me.”

Jason’s most impressive performance as a pro arguably was a one-sided,10-round win by decision against former NABO/NABA/WBC Continental Americas heavyweight champion Lance “Mount” Whitaker (32-5-1, 27 KOs) in their April 4, 2008 ESPN2 FNF show headliner.

In his last fight, Lawrence (13-2-2, 8 KOs) knocked out Lance Whitaker last September in the seventh round of their IBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight Championship bout. One of Lawrence’s two pro losses was to former world champion Oliver McCall by 10-round decision.

“I don’t know much about him other than he beat Lance Whitaker, a fighter I’ve also beaten,” Estrada noted. “It really doesn’t matter I know what I’ve been doing and he can’t match that. I haven’t fought for a while but my foot feels great. It’s the easier transition I’ve made in a long time. This is a great opportunity to get me back in the heavyweight mix. I’m happy not to be fighting in my opponent’s backyard like I did in my three losses.”

Lennox Allen in action Friday night in Yonkers, NY

Another Boxing 360 fighter, New York State super middleweight champion Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen (13-0-1, 8 KOs), will be in action Friday night against Jesse Orta in a 6-round, non-title fight at the Yonkers Armory.

“Since signing with us,” Boxing 360 Director of Boxing Bob Duffy remarked, “This is Jason’s first step towards getting into the worldwide ratings. He’s only two or three fights away from fighting any heavyweight in the world. He has great talent, ability, knowledge and he’ll fight anybody – all the ingredients to be heavyweight champion of the world. Jason is one of the few fighters to never turn-down an opponent. He has respect, but no fear, and that attitude is a key for being competitive today in the heavyweight division.”

Other members of Boxing 360’s stable include USBA heavyweight champion Maurice “Sugar Moe” Harris, Mike Mollo, world super bantamweight contender Leon “Hurry Up” Moore, Joshua “The Juice” Harris, Emad Ali, former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco” Berrio, NY State super middleweight title-holder Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen, KO king Tyrone Brunson, Angel “Toro” Hernandez and “King” David Estrada.

Graham Earl Hints At Early Morby-Cadman Title Rematch

Former World Champion, turned promoter, Graham Earl today hinted at the possibility of a rematch, between Portsmouth’s Paul Morby and Essex’s Daniel ‘The Slick’ Cadman, after their Southern Area Super Middleweight Title clash on Saturday being declared a draw by referee Jeff Hines.

Jeff Hines really had his work cut out as every round was close, many far too close to call. Whilst his decision was probably the fairest, a large percentage of those ringside disagreed having felt Cadman, who had been the far more aggressive of the pair, had done enough to lift the title.

This opinion wasn’t restricted to Cadman supporters as became clear when Morby’s manager-promoter Graham Earl spoke earlier today “I’d been running around so didn’t get to see the whole fight, but what I saw was that the fight seemed to be going Daniel Cadman’s way

Obviously I manage and promote Paul Morby so having a draw was good for me, as he lives to fight another day really.

It did look like he (Paul Morby) was coming on stronger in the final couple of rounds, maybe that was their tactics. I did see, I think it was the ninth round, and Paul seemed to be landing some heavy shots.

I think that now Paul’s had this wake up call, he’ll work harder so that we can look to move him on, maybe one more defense, which could well be a rematch in the near future with Daniel Cadman, then we’ll move Paul on to bigger and better things.”

The prospect of a rematch between these two closely matched battlers is sure to please the Cadman camp more than Morby’s, after all the draw did enable Morby to retain the title.

Graham Earl is expected to be announcing the details of his next show shortly, which may or may not include Morby- Cadman II for the Southern Area Super Middleweight title.

Austin “No Doubt” Trout

January 26, 2011 – Undefeated light middleweight sensation, Austin “No Doubt” Trout (21-0, 13 KO’s), gears up for the biggest fight of his life when he travels to Mexico to challenge Rigoberto Alvarez (26-2, 19 KO’s) on February 5, 2011, for the vacant WBA World light middleweight title. The fight was originally scheduled to place at the Sergio Leon Chávez Soccer Stadium in Irapuato, Guanajuato Mexico, but has been moved to Guadalajara according to Trout.

“I just got word that the fight has been moved to Guadalajara, Mexico.” said Trout. “This is my first world title shot and I’m going to leave everything in the ring come fight night. My training camp has shifted to the high altitude mountains of Ruidoso, New Mexico, where the elevation approaches 7,000 feet. Abraham “Abie” Han, Joaquin Zamora and Arturo Crespin are some of the guys that I’ve brought into camp, as well as some others. My timing is on and I’m happy with the way this camp has been going. I just want to get in the ring with Alvarez and show the world that I belong with the elite fighters in my division.”

Louie Burke, trainer for Austin Trout stated, “We are getting great sparring from the guys we’ve brought in. Everyone is giving Austin great work. His weight is good. Training in this high elevation is going to prepare us for Mexico. Austin has been preparing for this moment his whole life and I’m confident he’ll be ready to go when we step in the ring.”

Having worked so hard to get to this point in his boxing career, Trout went on to say, “As a kid you always dream of becoming a world champion and on February 5th, my goal is to make that dream come true.”

Cunningham to defend IBF Cruiserweight Title against Licina on February 12

Steve Cunningham (23-2, 12 KOs) will make a first defence of his IBF Cruiserweight Title in Mulheim, Germany on February 12 when he takes on mandatory challenger Enad Licina (19-2, 10 KOs). The clash was originally scheduled for January 22 but had to be postponed after IBF Middleweight Champion Sebastian Sylvester caught a virus infection, forcing Team Sauerland to cancel the entire card in Neubrandenburg. In the main event in Mulheim, Cuban cruiserweight sensation Yoan Pablo Hernandez (23-1, 12 KOs) will challenge WBA Interim Cruiserweight Champion Steve Herelius (21-1, 12 KOs).

Cunningham has returned to Philadelphia to continue his preparation. “The small delay is no problem for me,” the 34-year-old stated. “I will be in top shape. I think Licina is a good fighter. He is not to be underestimated, and he will not. He is the number one contender, this is a serious level of boxing and I take him and this fight very serious.”

Licina, who defeated Felix Cora Jr. in an eliminator in November, is also brimming with confidence. “I have performed very well in sparring,” he said. “That´s why I go into this fight with a lot of confidence. I know that a lot of people keep underestimating me and don´t think I can beat Cunningham. But everybody is beatable. Cunningham is a great champion but I will find a way to be victorious.”

Attached find picture of trainer Kevin Barry and WBA/IBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov in training at Team Barry Boxing.

Barry training KZ Event Quartet

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 26, 2011) – 1984 Olympic Silver Medalist Kevin Barry is training a unique, talented quartet of boxers from Kazakhstan, featuring WBA/IBA Light Heavyweight Champion Beibut Shumenov, and Uzbekistan out of his gym, Team Barry Boxing, in Henderson, Nevada.

Shumenov (11-1, 7 KOs) and light welterweight Alexandr Zhuravskiy (10-0, 8 KOs) are Kazakhstan natives, while WBA No. 6 light heavyweight Gayrat Ahmedov (16-0-1, 10 KOs) and WBA No. 13 welterweight Ravshan Hudaynazarov (14-0, 12 KOs), are from Uzbekistan. All four members of this unique foursome now live in Las Vegas, where they’re trained by Barry, who guided heavyweight title challenger David Tua for 12 years.

Shumenov owns and operates the Las Vegas-based KZ Event Productions along with his brother, Chingis.Zhuravskiy, Ahmedov and Hudaynazarov are promoted by KZ Event Productions and Beibut is a hands-on promoter, guiding their careers as a promoter/fighter, as well as in terms of training, fight preparation, and selecting opponents.

Shumenov, the 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian, and New Zealander Barry have developed a special relationship in the past 12 months, including Beibut’s WBA title-winning performance against defending champion Gabriel Campillo and two successful title-defenses versus mandatory, previously unbeaten Vlacheslav Uzelkov and 3-time world champion William Joppy. Shumenov holds the record for fewest fights (10) to capture a major world light heavyweight title.

“Training Beibut for only two months going into his second fight against Campillo,” Barry explained, “I didn’t know how much of a difference it would make but with Beibut’s exceptional abilities and willingness to learn it was enough. We had more time working together for the Uzelkov fight and he showed tremendous improvement. After a full year I know my fighter: he is much more accomplished, better skilled, and he’s made huge improvements in his abilities. Beibut is more comfortable and polished and he has grown into his role the last 12 months.

“Originally, I had said give me 5-6 fights to see what type of fighter Beibut is. We’ve now had three fights together and his conditioning has improved greatly. He has better balanced and understands distance in fights. He’s gone from a primarily 1-2 puncher into one with extensive energy and an arsenal of weapons. Beibut is comfortable throwing and landing blows to any part of his opponent’s body. He has also grown into a world champion; confident in himself, and he shows more maturity than many fighters with more years in this business. As a fighter, he has grown a lot in 12 months, winning the WBA title in only his 10th fight and defending it in grand fashion against Uzelkov and under difficult circumstances against Joppy. It’s incredible that he’s made all of these accomplishments having turned pro only three years ago.

“Beibut challenges himself by setting high goals and he will still continue to improve. I said I needed 5-6 fights to see what type of fighter he is but, by then, he may unify all of the belts. Beibut is very driven and the sky’s the limit for him. He believes there’s nothing he can’t do. I’m excited about what he’s done in the past 12 months. Under the circumstances, I thought Beibut’s performance against Joppy was incredible. After (WBO champion Juergen) Braemher pulled out, in my opinion, like a coward in the middle of the night without telling anybody, Beibut was in a fight I didn’t like because he was fighting a last-minute replacement with a lot of experience (Joppy). Mentally and emotionally, I was concerned because he was deflated and he had to get back up in only three days. Everything worked out well for us. He is taking the right steps to be a star in the future.”

Barry also broke-down the other trio of defeated fighters he trains — Ahmedov, Interim PABA and WBA International Light Heavyweight Champion; Hudaynazarov, WBA FEDALATIN Welterweight Champion; and Zhuravskiy, WBA International Super Lightweight Champion.

“Gayrat is a strong, durable fighter who is a terrific body puncher. He has heavy hands and we’re working to get him throwing more punches. Ravshan has phenomenal output. He throws 6 to 10 punches at a time and he’s a devastating body puncher. Body punches take more out of a fighter than head shots and Ravshan loves hitting the body. They can’t shake-off his body punches. He has developed into a seasoned fighter who has gone around gyms in Las Vegas beating-up most guys. Ravshan is legitimate. His progress has been very exciting. Alex, I’ve only had two months with but he is a real exciting prospect. He is a very strong, tough fighter who’s a huge 140-pounder. You would think he’s a 154-pounder — he’s bigger than Ravshan! Alex is a southpaw with a great amateur background. He is a good puncher who loves to fight. He is more like Beibut than Gayrat or Ravshan. You can never ask him to do too much. Picture an old-school Russian fighter and that’s what he looks like with that great work ethic. He didn’t speak a word of English when he got here but he’s very disciplined and listens to me and my assistant coach, Dewey Cooper.”

Despite working with four foreign-born fighters, Barry insists that there are no communication barriers because all of them now speak English, maybe not as fluent as Beibut, but more than enough to understand what they have to do. Beibut also speaks Russian, Kazak, Turkish and Uzbekistan; Uzbekistan and Russian for Gayrat, Ravshan only Uzbekistan, and Zhuravskiy speaks Russian and Kazak.

“Boxing has a universal language – signs and showing what we mean — that all of us understand,” Barry concluded. “Ravshan’s improvement speaking English is out of sight. Beibut has made the transition so much easier for me by translating in order to explain small details to them. He has been instrumental taking part in their careers as a leader for them to follow. Beibut sets the standard and the others try and keep up with him.”

Is Amir Un-Khan-cerned About His Legacy?

Junior welterweight power puncher Breidis Prescott (23-2, 19 KOs) remains hopeful that someone on Amir Khan’s team will finally convince their young champion to do the right thing.

Prescott says that instead of squabbling about purses and trying to convince unknown fighters to face him for lousy money in a forgettable fight, Khan should give fans the world over what they’re overwhelmingly asking for – Prescott vs. Khan II.

“Is he really so unconcerned about his legacy and reputation that he’ll continue this sad campaign to shame unknown fighters into the ring with him for chump change? Does he read what the boxing world is saying about what he’s doing?”

Khan’s latest opponent, Marcos Maidana, recently put out a press release about claims that potential foes are pricing themselves out of fighting Khan. “…he always has the money excuse prepared to be thrown out in case boxing fans and TV networks pressure him to face big challenges,” Maidana said.

“I’m beginning to agree with Maidana on this one,” continued Prescott. “I’ve been saying I’ll be reasonable about money from the start. None of the other opponents he’s been chasing after will make for a fight half as intriguing and lucrative as our rematch would be.”

For those who don’t recall, Prescott gave Khan a leather-made sleep aid in 54 seconds in September 2008 at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester.

“Amir, you still don’t have an opponent. Stop these games and act like a champion. If you’re having so much trouble making fights that no one cares about, call me and you’ll have an easy time making a fight the entire world wants to see!”

BROSCH AND VARGAS SET TO BATTLE FOR CANADIAN WELTERWEIGHT SUPREMACY

TORONTO, ON – (JANUARY 27, 2011) On February 19th, titles, bragging rights, and careers will be on the line at Mississauga’s Hershey Centre, in a card being called one of the most important in recent Canadian boxing history.

And in an evening packed with significant fights, including the first title defense of NABA lightweight champion Logan Cotton McGuinness, the North American return of former WBC junior welterweight world champion Junior Witter, two unheralded warriors are primed to steal the show

In a 10 round battle, undefeated welterweight prospect Sammy “El Producto” Vargas (7-0, 1 KO) looks to add his first professional title to his resume when he faces Canadian welterweight champion Tebor Brosch (6-3-4, 2 KO’s) for the NABA Canadian welterweight crown, in a fight that has Southern Ontario fight fans salivating.

With no amateur career to speak of, and only 6 pro fights on his resume, Vargas showed the world what he’s capable of when he ventured to Moncton New Brunswick last October and toppled the accomplished Jhonny Navarette (16-4-1, 8 KO’s) via unanimous decision.

And while that victory surprised many, Vargas’ trainer, the world-renowned Chris Johnson, saw it coming.

“Sammy shows me so much in the gym everyday, that nothing he accomplishes will ever surprise me,” Johnson said.

“He just showed Navarette, and the world, what I already know; that with hard work, and attention to detail, he can be a great fighter.”

But as bright as Vargas’ future is shaping up to be, he’ll be facing a fighter in Brosch desperate to keep a once bleak looking pro career on the upswing.

After just one win in his first seven pro fights, Brosch has done a complete one-eighty, going undefeated in his last seven, including a decision over Justin Fountain last July to claim the Canadian Welterweight title, and the confidence to succeed where he previously came up short.

“I now know what it takes to win in this sport. I know the price I have to pay, and, finally, how to pay it,” Brosch said.

“This is going to be a great fight. Sammy is a good fighter, with a very good trainer, and naturally they’re very confident. But you can say the same about me and my trainer Jerome Coffee.”

“Sammy is skilled, but far less experienced. I feel like I’m stronger, and that I have an answer for what he brings to the table.”

For promoter Adam Harris, of Hennessy Sports Canada, Vargas vs. Brosch is easily the most important fight of each man’s respective careers, and one that Vargas cannot take lightly.

“Sometimes, when you look to get a Canadian-based title, the pickings can be pretty easy,” said Harris said.

“But if Sammy wants to leave with that NABA Canadian belt, he’s going to have to pay the price against Tebor.”

“Brosch has overcome a very slow start to his career to become the Canadian welterweight champion. He earned that belt the hard way, and he’ll make sure if Sammy beats him on February 19th, it’ll be with everything he’s got.”

Tickets for the February 19th show at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, presented by United Promotions in association with Hennessy Sports, are available now starting at $25 at the Hershey Centre box office, or through Ticketmaster by calling (416) 872-5000 or logging onto www.ticketmaster.ca.

Toks Owoh Vs. JJ Ojuederie Headline ‘Unleash The Fury’ At York Hall, March 5th.

Steve Goodwin celebrates his first year as a boxing promoter with two huge shows in March, the first, at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 5th March 2011, is headlined by Toks Owoh versus JJ Ojuderie and is supported by no less than fourteen bouts featuring the cream of the Capital’s upcoming young fighters.

On announcing the ‘Unleash The Fury’ event Steve Goodwin said, “The York Hall show, ‘Unleash The Fury’, on March 5th is a showcase for our boxers that are on the way up.

Our main show is at Dagenham on March 19th but we’ve got a lot of people that want to fight on our shows. Basically we’ve created a second show where we’re going to see a lot of upcoming talent, as well as a couple of boxers that have the potential to go to British and European championship level.

Toks Owoh will be headlining the show, he’s desperate to box Southern Area champion Leon Williams. He’s so desperate to fight Leon he says he’d do it for free because he wants to hurt him badly. He says he doesn’t want money for that. He’ll enjoy it. Unfortunately Leon’s got other arrangements, he’s on a Frank Maloney show in February.

Toks is hoping to put on a real good show on March 5th against JJ Ojuederie because he wants to show he can do a better job on JJ than Leon did. But he desperately wants to get Leon in the ring. Toks is after the British title, just the same as Leon is. That could be an interesting match up for later in 2011.

Also on the show we have the World Kick Boxing Champion, Llir Canolli from Cosavo. He’s very, very exciting to see. He is very well regarded and has been tipped to become a Boxing World Champion. So we’re very privileged for him to be coming over to fight on the show. He’s a true Cruiserweight prospect so we’re very excited to be seeing him.

I’m personally excited to see the come back of Michael Devine. He’s a very, very exciting come forward fighter. He lost in his last fight, on his 21st birthday, against Mark Alexander last year.

He took some time out and got himself back together. He’s working like a demon in the gym and I think this is the year we see Michael Devine progress through the ranks. Hopefully by December we’ll have Mark Alexander back in the ring with him so he can set the record straight.

It’s a big card, there will be fifteen bouts on the night. It’s going to be a big card, anything I am associated with I want to be known as giving value for money by the public and make sure that there is always a fantastic atmosphere and packed arenas.

It’s going to be a lot of four round fights with up and coming prospects. It’s going to be an exciting night of boxing. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Steve Goodwin’s ‘Unleash The Fury’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London is headlined by a six round Cruiserweight contest between Toks Owoh versus JJ Ojuederie.

The huge fourteen bout undercard features some of London’s best upcoming talents and includes Ultrachem TKO’s ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield against Birmingham’s Andrew ‘Paddy’ Patterson.

Three Ultrachem TKO gym mates of Daryl Setterfield are also on the show, Light Heavyweight Joel ‘El Toro’ McIntyre, Light Middleweights Nathan Weise and Brett O’Callaghan, all against yet to be named opponents.

Also appearing on the show are Rainham Super Featherweight Richard Hines, Luton Lightweight Michael ‘Chunky’ Devine, unbeaten Biggleswade Light Middleweight Jamie Boness, Minster. Kent Light Heavyweight Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate, Woolwich Super Middleweight Eder Kurti, Waltham Abbey Light Welterweight Phil Gill and unbeaten in twelve Hackney Middleweight Wayne Alwan-Arab.

Making his first outing as a professional is Highbury Super Featherweight Charlie Kelly who is set to face the highly experienced Birmingham battler Anthony ‘Spanner’ Hanna.

Also making their pro debuts at ‘Unleash The Fury’ are Harlesden Lightweight Met Sekiraqa and former World Kick Boxing Champion, Llir Canolli from Cosavo.

Tickets for Unleash The Fury at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 5th March 2011 are on sale now – priced £35 (Unreserved) or £60 (Ringside).

For tickets call: 07960 850645, book on-line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at The Ultrachem TKO Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA.
