July 2009 – Howard Davis Jr., 1976 Boxing Olympic Gold Medalist, will have a street named after him in his hometown of Glen Cove, NY. The event will take place on Friday, July 10th, 2009.
Howard Davis Jr. is one of the most decorated and successful amateurs in American Boxing history. Just 3-days before Davis won the Gold Medal in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, his mother Catherine past away of a heart attack. Davis Jr. dedicated his Lightweight division Olympic victory to his beloved mother.
Davis Jr. was also named the Outstanding Boxer of the 1976 Olympics and given the Val Barker Trophy, an Olympics that included Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael Spinks and Leon Spinks.
Davis Jr. turned pro after winning the Olympics. He retired in 1994 with a professional record of: 36-6-1 with 14 KO’s.
Howard’s father – Howard Davis Sr. – will also be honored for his services as the “Father of the Community” in Glen Cove. Before it became the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club it was the Lincoln House and Davis Sr. served as the Director in the 1960’s. Davis Sr. past away earlier this year and was in his son’s corner as boxing trainer for nearly his entire career.
A mural of Howard Davis Jr. and his parents will also be unveiled during the street naming ceremony hosted by Glen Cove, NY Mayor Ralph Suozzi.

He runs the Howard Davis Jr. Fitness Boot Camp, travels across the country for speaking engagements, serves as a commentator during sporting events and plays 4 musical instruments.
