Dierry Jean returned to the ring after being out of action for nearly a year, and he did so in stunning fashion by dominating veteran Francisco Lorenzo over 10 rounds at the Belle Centre in Montreal Thursday night. Things started off well for the Canadian by way of Haiti, a violent shot putting Francisco Lorenzo down in the opening round. Over the next few rounds, Jean continued his dominance—Francisco Lorenzo was never able to get comfortable, bouncing around the ring and swinging wildly, the opposite of the poised Dierry Jean.
In the 8th, a counter uppercut counter wobbled Lorenzo badly. Hard right hands snapped the head of Lorenzo back with regularity. The 9th round continued with more of the same, a boxing clinic from Dierry Jean. An uppercut toward the end of the round literally lifted Lorenzo in the air to score another knockdown.
It was a brilliant performance by Dierry Jean against a fighter who frankly, can be hard to look good against. With the win, Dierry Jean looks as if he could be someone to be reckoned with in the Jr. Welterweight division. After the fight, Dierry Jean was thrilled with his victory.
“It felt very good. I’ve been training for months, and months with my great team, and everything was great! I was well prepared.”
Even the rough tactics of Francisco Lorenzo couldn’t deter him.
“I kept my calm, and I did what I had to do.”
Dierry’s promoter Yvon Michel was also very happy with Dierry Jean’s performance.
“I’m very, very impressed by Dierry Jean. There are things you can’t teach in boxing. You can’t teach how to hit hard. You can’t teach skill. He’s got skill. He’s got good, good ability, and I really believe Dierry Jean showed tonight that he belongs with the elite fighters of his division.”
Yvon says Dierry will be back in action in January.
“He proved himself tonight. We’re going to aim for a title now. Our goal is to bring Dierry to the top-10 in the world.”
On a day of heavy rain showers in Montreal, Eleidier “Storm” Alvarez continued on the theme with a devastating performance in the evening’s co-feature. Alvarez had an easy night of work against the game, but smaller Michael Walchuck. After 6-rounds, Walchuck was unable to answer the bell to the 7th round, citing a hand injury. Hand injury or not, Eleider was dominant, and looked to be well on his way to a stoppage victory regardless.
In undercard action, two local Heavyweight hopes scored victories. Oscar “Kaboom” Rivas (7-0) was particularly impressive with his knockout out Edgars Kalnars (21-24) in the first round. A former Latvian Heavyweight Champion, Kalnars was dropped with a looping right from the iron fisted Rivas early in the 1st. It wouldn’t last much longer. After a series of punches against the ropes, another right hand ended the bout.
Didier Bence, a former amateur standout for Canada, entered the ring for his 3rd professional fight. In strong fashion, Bence stayed unbeaten by shutting out Pavel Dolgovs in a 4-rounder. A consistent assault to the body paired with precision power shots kept Dolgovs from ever being competitive.
Also in action tonight, Tyler Asselstine turned in a stellar performance, stopping Isaac Bejerano in 4 rounds; Ghislain Maduma defeated Jevgejs Kirillovs with scores of 60-54(twice) and 59-55; and Manolis Plaitis beat Arvydas Trizno in an exciting back-and-forth fight.
