After participating in one of the best heavyweight contests of the year last weekend in a loss to Tyson Fury, former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck ‘Del Boy’ Chisora is looking to do it again.
On his Twitter account, Chisora states, “The best fighter won on the night. I don’t want to take anything away from him. There will be a rematch soon.”
While new British and Commonwealth champ Fury has been looking elsewhere for his next opponent (veteran Irish heavyweight Martin Rogan has been mentioned), a Chisora rematch is an attractive option as well. The fight provided much of the fireworks that many felt were lacking from the recent David Haye vs Wladimir Klitschko heavyweight showdown, and did very well on domestic television in the UK, with a peak audience of 2.9 million viewers.
With ratings like that, no doubt the idea of a Fury-Chisora rematch will be an easy sell to the powers that be.
Chisora came into the Fury fight at a career high weight, suggesting that perhaps, after seeing two scheduled title fights with world champion Wladimir Klitschko fall through, ‘Del Boy’ had a hard time getting motivated to fight the massive Irish traveller. Chisora also made some jaded-sounding statements before the fight that had some, including his opponent, question whether he is fully committed to being a boxer.
“What can you say, he’s not a boxer, he’s not a fighter, it’s a money game to him, it’s like a job or work,” Fury said of Chisora.
Perhaps the daunting reality that he is now an ex-champion will be enough to prod Chisora into entering a rematch in prime condition.
