WALSH AND APPLEBY TARGET BURNS

Liam Walsh or Paul Appleby could be on a collision course with WBO World Super-Featherweight champion Ricky Burns.

But first they will fight each other on Friday 30th September at Bethnal Green’s York Hall.

The pair meet in a clash for Walsh’s Commonwealth super-featherweight crown on an action-packed Friday night fight.

The show is promoted by Frank Warren’s sons Francis and George, and features some exciting youngsters eager to make a name for themselves, while Walsh and Appleby top the bill in a classic Battle of Britain.

And there’s plenty of mutual respect as they attempt to close the gap on Scottish stylist Burns, the country’s top man at 130 pounds.

“Liam’s a good fighter, and he’ll give me a tough contest,” said former British and Commonwealth featherweight champion Appleby.

“But I’m confident that I’ll win. I’ve been in great shape since I teamed up with trainer Billy Nelson.

“I feel like I have improved 100% in the last few months.

“People are going to see a far better fighter on September 30, and I’m really looking forward to coming down to London and sampling the York Hall atmosphere.

“As for Burns, he’s on the agenda, but it’s a long term goal.

“A fight between us has been spoken about for a while, I’d love to fight for a world title. But all I’m concentrating on is Liam Walsh at the moment.”

Undefeated Walsh, one of the three fighting brothers from Cromer in Norfolk, spoke in similar vein.

“All this talk of Burns means nothing if I get beaten against Appleby,” said the 25-year-old southpaw.

“The only fight that I am thinking about at the moment is the one against Paul in a couple of week’s time.

“I’ve seen some of his fights before, and even when he has lost, he has been a real threat, really dangerous.

“He’s coming down to London determined to take my belt off me, and I have to give him 100% respect.

“I’ll have the home support, so Paul’s already shown plenty of guts agreeing to get on the plane, so fair play to him.

“I’m expecting the toughest fight of my career, and I’ll have to be at my very best to keep hold of my title.”

Tickets, priced at £40 and £60, are available on 01992 550 888.
