John McCallum trains in Tenerife ahead of May 20th fight

Edinburgh’s John McCallum (1-0) has got over a recent ankle injury by stepping up his training in the Spanish island of Tenerife at Nicky cook’s TKO gym. The Edinburgh based super middleweight recently returned from injury after suffering a broken ankle brought on by tough training and missed out on a opportunity to stretch his record to 2-0 on the previous Prospect Promotions card in Wishaw. Talking about his injury McCallum admits his frustration “Having picked up the injury it was really frustrating as I wanted to get in that ring and show people what skills and talent I have”

Looking for his first KO win in the paid ranks McCallum faced some tough sparring in fellow Edinburgh fighter and undefeated prospect John Thain amongst others. While getting the rounds in McCallum also took to the road and enjoyed some tough roadwork by scaling the tough terrain of Mount Teide. Talking about the opportunity “This was a good opportunity for me to get a good bit of training in . I liked the choice of sparring partners out there and it really helped me to come on my game and I really stepped it up. The road work up the mountain was tough but I felt that training at that altitude will help my stamina and power come May 20th”

In addition to the training that McCallum also took advice from two former world champions who were resident on the Spanish Island at the time. Former Ring Belt holder and two weight champion Ricky Hatton was on hand to give advice, as was former super featherweight world champion Nicky cook “They gave me advice on how to develop my power and listening to these guys who have made it to the top i really made me determined to be the best in the division and put a show on for the fans on may 20th”

John McCallum is next in action against Doncastor’s James Tucker on the “Prospect Promotions” bumper card on May 20th Ravenscraig regional sports facility,. The bumper card features 7 fights featuring the undefeated Chris Steel, Paul Allison and Wilshaw’s comeback king Kenny Davidson. Also on the comeback trail is Stephen Russell.
